Chevy Annouces Free Update That Brings Android Auto to 12 More Cars & Trucks

Now that Android Auto and Apple CarPlay have finally arrived, the days of clunky in-dash infotainment systems are coming to an end. Instead of using software created by an automotive company to get directions, stream music, or take calls, we can now get the best user experience Silicon Valley has to offer—all while sitting comfortably in the driver's seat.

These new systems work by plugging your smartphone into your car, so all of the apps and services you're used to will seamlessly transition from your handheld device over to your dashboard. Apple CarPlay requires an iPhone 5 or newer, while Android Auto requires a device running Lollipop or higher, so when a manufacturer like Chevrolet offers both, that means the vast majority of smartphone owners are covered.

Chevy Bringing Android Auto to Many More 2016 Models

In a recent press release, Chevrolet announced that it will be issuing a free software update that will bring Android Auto to all 2016 model vehicles that feature their 8-inch MyLink Infotainment unit. Previously, Android Auto was only available in Chevy cars and trucks that featured the 7-inch in-dash display, so this update effectively brings Android Auto to Chevy's full lineup.

For people who already own a 2016 model Chevrolet vehicle with the 8-inch MyLink system, getting Android auto will be incredibly simple. Just take your car or truck into any Chevrolet dealership, where the technicians will perform a free, 30-minute software update that brings Android Auto compatibility to your vehicle.

The following vehicles are eligible for this free Android Auto software update, provided that they have the 8-inch MyLink Infotainment system:

  • Malibu (Excludes Limited)
  • Impala
  • Volt
  • Camaro
  • Camaro Convertible
  • Corvette
  • Corvette Convertible
  • Colorado
  • Silverado
  • Silverado HD
  • Tahoe
  • Suburban

Have any older Chevy or other vehicle? You can always turn your Android device into an Android Auto clone.
